World Drumming!

Explore drumming from around the world in this hands-on class this fall! Taught by instructor Carolyn Koebel, the class is scheduled for Monday evenings beginning Sept 20 at The Music Center. Ages 15 all through adult, $80, plus registration fee.

Carolyn Koebel is adjunct professor in music therapy at Western Michigan University. She holds undergraduate degrees in music therapy and percussion studies from WMU, where she was named the Presidential Scholar for the School of Music. She has a Master's in Music Therapy from Michigan State University, receiving the prestigious graduate Merit Fellowship for her work specializing in the use of drumming for health and healing. In addition to maintaining an active private music therapy practice and performing extensively, she presents workshops regionally and nationally on the therapeutic applications of drumming, and holistic training seminars on rhythmic skill development.

Now offering Music First on Saturday mornings!

This fall, CMS-Battle Creek offers Saturday morning Music First classes for ages infant to 3 years. Taught by Elinor Marsh, these classes are great for families whose schedule cannot accommodate the weekday classes. See the Music First page for pricing and more information. Compose Yourself

Always wanted to write music? You can write your own piece in a class offered at CMS-Battle Creek this fall. Instructor Philip Rugel will assist students in the composition process, and students will perform their pieces the final day of class. Compose Yourself is open to ages 12 through adult, and is intended for woodwinds, brass, guitar, and voice. No composition experience necessary. $110 for the 11 week-session, plus a $10 registration fee. Read Music and Play It This Fall in Marshall!

If you play music by ear and need help reading it, or if you are just curious how music is put together, the six-week course "Music Theory Boot Camp" at the Community Music School in Marshall could enrich your musical experiences for years to come. Adults and youth age 13 and up can now register for this weekly, one-hour class.

Instructor and professional flutist Anthony Sanchez holds a Bachelor of Music degree from University of New Mexico and a Master of Music degree from Michigan State University. "Music Theory Boot Camp" costs $10/session, plus registration fee. Need-based financial aid is available.

Concert Band this Fall!

CMS-Battle Creek is adding the former KCC Concert Band to its offerings starting Fall 2010. Directed by Laura Hirleman, Concert Band plans 2-hr rehearsals on Tuesday evenings, starting Sep 7, and is open without auditions to instrumentalists teen and up. Enjoy a variety of repertoire and learn valuable ensemble skills. Cost is $75/semester, plus $10 registration fee. Financial aid available.
